Intro

The 2026 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 arrives at a time when brands are increasingly offering both electric and internal-combustion versions of the same model. But as this review points out, the EV option is not always automatically the better choice. Priced at just over $75,000 in this top-spec EV form, the Countryman SE ALL4 uses two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, giving it all-wheel drive. With a 65 kWh battery, 230 kW, 494 Nm, and a 0–100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds, it has the performance numbers to feel quick, but the bigger question is whether it makes more sense than its internal-combustion sibling.

Exterior

The MINI Countryman SE ALL4 makes a strong first impression, especially because there is a lot of gold. Gold appears around the closed-off EV grille area, the MINI badge, the wheels, the side skirts, and the rear design details. It gives the car a bold and eccentric personality, even if the amount of gold will not be for everyone. Overall, the Countryman’s design works well. It looks like a MINI Cooper that has been widened, raised, and turned into a compact SUV. Up front, it has LED headlights, a closed-off EV-style front end, and lower cooling openings for the battery. Along the side, it has 20-inch gold alloy wheels, flush door handles, cladding, and ALL4 badging. At the rear, the Countryman continues the playful MINI theme with Union Jack-style LED tail-lights, Countryman badging, MINI badging, more gold trim, and no fake exhaust outlets. There is a fake diffuser, but on an EV, that is easier to forgive. Overall, it is a very good-looking compact electric SUV with a lot more personality than most rivals.

Interior

The interior is one of the Countryman SE ALL4’s biggest strengths. It feels eccentric, stylish, and full of personality in a way that many electric SUVs do not. Instead of feeling like a sterile sea of screens, the cabin feels like someone actually designed it with character in mind. The dashboard and door trims use recycled polyester with blue and copper-like detailing, while ambient lighting glows behind the textured surfaces. The air vents, steering wheel trim, toggle switches, and small MINI design touches all help the cabin feel playful and premium. The start/stop control is a little key-like toggle rather than a basic button, which adds to the sense of occasion. The steering wheel has an unusual strap-like lower spoke and ergonomic hand rests, while the JCW bucket seats are comfortable, supportive, and trimmed with patterns that reference the British flag. The whole cabin feels creative, unusual, and very MINI. Technology is centred around MINI’s round OLED display. It is clear, crisp, intuitive, and visually impressive, continuing the classic MINI idea of a central circular display. It also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The downside is that almost everything is controlled through the screen, including climate functions, which is frustrating because there are no proper physical climate knobs or buttons. Practicality up front is decent, with cup holders, a small bin, extra storage trays, wireless phone charging, two USB-C ports, a 12-volt socket, bottle-friendly door bins, and a decent glovebox. There is no traditional centre console, which feels like a missed opportunity. The second row is usable, with okay knee room, good headroom, space to stretch feet under the front seat, USB-C charging, air vents, seatback pockets, door bins, a centre armrest with cup holders, ISOFIX points, and three top tether points. Boot space is 460 litres with the second row up and just over 1,400 litres with the seats folded.

On the Road

On the road, the Countryman SE ALL4 is a comfortable and capable daily EV. It feels quiet, smooth, and easy to drive, with frequency adaptive dampers helping it absorb bumps while still keeping the car tied down when pushed harder. Visibility is mostly good, and the car is easy enough to manoeuvre around town. The 360-degree camera is clear and useful, making parking and low-speed driving much easier. Efficiency is the main downside. Energy consumption sits around 18.3 kWh/100 km, with real-world use closer to 20.5 kWh/100 km. For a compact electric SUV, that is on the higher side. Range is also just over 400 km, which makes the internal-combustion Countryman more appealing for buyers who regularly travel longer distances. Regenerative braking is another frustration. The Countryman offers a B mode for single-pedal driving, and it works well for those who enjoy that style. However, reducing or disabling regen requires digging through menus, and even then, the system never feels fully switched off. In Go-Kart mode, the Countryman becomes much more entertaining. It launches hard, reaches 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and feels playful for a compact electric SUV. Body roll is well controlled, the brakes feel strong, and the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system gives it plenty of grip. The steering is the main dynamic letdown. Given MINI’s connection to BMW, a heavier and more connected steering feel would have made the car even better. Still, the Countryman SE ALL4 is fun, quirky, and far more characterful than many electric SUVs.

Safety Tech

The Countryman SE ALL4 includes useful driver assistance and visibility technology, with the 360-degree camera standing out as one of the most helpful features. The camera display is clear and gives a strong view around the vehicle, which makes parking and tight manoeuvres much easier. Warranty coverage includes five years bumper-to-bumper warranty, five years roadside assistance, and eight years or 100,000 km of battery coverage, whichever comes first. Charging is competitive for the segment. AC charging supports up to 22 kW, taking around 3 hours and 45 minutes from 0 to 100 percent. On an 11 kW charger, charging takes more than six hours. DC fast charging peaks at 130 kW, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in around 29 minutes.

Our Verdict

The MINI Countryman SE ALL4 is not the easiest EV to recommend purely on numbers. Its range is only just over 400 km, energy consumption is high, and charging speed is not class-leading. The internal-combustion Countryman offers more than 600 km of range and removes some of the range anxiety that comes with this EV version. But numbers are not the whole story here. The Countryman SE ALL4 stands out because it has character, style, personality, and a sense of fun that many EVs lack. The interior feels genuinely designed rather than generated from the same screen-heavy template as everything else, and the Go-Kart mode gives the car a playful side. As a motoring enthusiast, the reviewer admits he is not the biggest EV fan, but still gives this Countryman an 8/10 Motor Marvel rating because it is fun and quirky enough to stand apart. It also earns an 8/10 overall rating. For buyers who want maximum range and charging speed, the ICE Countryman may make more sense. But for someone who wants a stylish, eccentric, personality-packed electric compact SUV, the MINI Countryman SE ALL4 deserves to be near the top of the list.
